Arthur Lupia is Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation and serves as Head of its Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate. In Washington, he also co-chairs the National Science and Technology Council’s Open Science Subcommittee. At the University of Michigan, he serves as the Hal R. Varian Collegiate Professor.
Dr. Lupia’s research and related public work examines processes, principles, and factors that guide decision-making and learning. His efforts draw from mathematics, statistics, neuroscience, economics, psychology and other scientific disciplines. His work influences scholarship and practice on civic competence, how to increase the public value of science, and improving science communication. For this work, Lupia has been named a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, an Andrew Carnegie Fellow, and is a recipient of the National Academy of Sciences Award for Initiatives in Research.
Prior to joining NSF, Lupia served as Chairman of the Board for the Center for Open Science and as Chair of the National Academies Roundtable on the Communication and Use of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Lupia has held leadership positions in numerous other scientific societies.
