Karen A. Robinson, PhD is Professor of Medicine (Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Health Sciences Informatics) and Public Health (Departments of Epidemiology and Health Policy and Management) at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Robinson is Director of the Johns Hopkins University Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) and, within the EPC Program, serves as an Associate Editor and on the Methods Steering Committee. For more than 20 years, she has been an active member of Cochrane, as a systematic review author, a methods researcher as well as an editor for two review groups (including the methodology review group). Dr. Robinson conducts research on the use of evidence in making decisions, including the use of existing systematic reviews and the use of evidence in identifying evidence gaps and future research needs. She coined the term ‘evidence-based research’ – the use of prior research in a systematic and transparent way to inform a new study so that it is answering questions that matter in a valid, efficient and accessible manner – and serves as a founding steering group member of the Evidence-Based Research Network.
